We’ll Continue Advocacy On Fight Against Malaria 

Pest control managers under the supervision of Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) has reiterated their commitment to continue collaborating with government and other relevant stakeholders on the fight against mosquitoes in the country.

The Association’s president, Olakunle Williams disclosed this in a press conference and lecture to celebrate 2024 world mosquito day with the theme: “Accelerating the fight against malaria for an equitable world” held at NUT Pavilion, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Giving details about the World Mosquito Day, he said it was introduced as a mark of honour to the 1897 scientific discovery of a British Doctor by the name Sir Ronald Ross who succeeded in revealing to the whole world that the female Anopheles mosquito was the cause of Malaria, saying the discovery laid the foundations for scientists across the world to better understand the deadly role of mosquitoes in disease transmission and come up with effective innovative interventions.

Mr Williams said accelerating the fight against malaria is not only saving lives but also contributing to the creation of a more equitable world where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and productive life, noting that fight against malaria is a fight for equity as it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations—pregnant women, children under five especially those living in rural areas.

He explained that PECAN, an association comprising professionals dedicated to pest management has been playing a critical role in the fight against malaria causing  mosquitoes and will continue to be committed in driving innovation, enforcing best practices, and ensuring that mosquito control interventions are both effective and environmentally sustainable in Nigeria.

“PECAN has been committed in promoting Integrated Vector Management (IVM). Integrating multiple strategies—such as larviciding, indoor residual spraying (IRS) and the use of insecticide-treated net with the assurance of reducing mosquito populations. The Association will continue to invest in the training of pest control professionals across the country, ensuring they are equipped with the latest knowledge and tools to combat malaria.

“It will also dig-deep in raising awareness about the importance of mosquito control and the dangers of malaria. We will intensify  efforts to educate the public and policymakers about the benefits of sustained mosquito control programmes.

“PECAN will strengthen partnerships with government agencies, international organizations and the private sector to enhance the reach and impact of malaria control interventions. It will continue to engage governments at all levels in making policies that will eliminate mosquitoes in Nigeria. Open dumping of refuse needs to be frowned at by the governments, littering of our drainages with waste plastic bottles, cans and the likes should be campaigned against. Fighting against malaria for an equitable world is urgent needed for concerted efforts to eliminate malaria and address the disparities it perpetuates in our society,” Olakunle, concluded.

Planning committee chairman, Amos Igbedi, in his opening remarks, said this years theme “reflects a cause that is not just a global health priority but a mission that touches the very core of our society’s quest for justice, equality and well-being. Fight against malaria is more than a health issue; Its a battle for human dignity and equality.

“Fighting against malaria is about ensuring every child, regardless of where are born has opportunity to grow up free from the threat of devastating disease. It also about creating a world where the accident of one’s birthplace does not determine their chances of survival.”

Igbedi charged every members of the association on continuing public enlightenment against malaria as it is a fight for equitable world. “Together we can accelerate our efforts, drive meaningful change and move closer to a world free from burden of malaria.
