SECURITY/HEALTH RISKS: LASU Bans Lecturers, Students From Sleeping In Offices, Classrooms

2 min read
The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has issued a directive to staff and students, prohibiting the use of offices and classrooms as overnight accommodations.
This directive was issued following a discussion at the university Senate’s 311th Statutory Meeting on June 27, 2024, which addressed concerns raised in a security report (Ref No: LASU/SEN/ST.311/024/AOB).
The report highlighted instances of staff and students using offices and classrooms for overnight stays, often with makeshift arrangements and kitchen utensils, Vanguard reports.
This behavior is deemed unacceptable and poses significant security and health risks.
In a related development, it was noted that certain members of the LASU Student Union Executive Committee had converted their offices at the Students Union Arcade into living quarters, occasionally hosting overnight guests of the opposite sex.
When confronted by security officers, these members claimed autonomy over the Arcade due to its student-controlled status.
In response, the Senate, after reviewing and adjusting the recommendations from the Chief Security Officer, outlined the following actions: “Staff and students are instructed to cease the practice of sleeping overnight in offices and classrooms.
“Overnight stays on campus are permitted for students only during examination periods.
“Strict disciplinary measures will be taken against any staff or students found violating these guidelines.
“Academic staff needing to stay overnight on campus due to work obligations must inform the Chief Security Officer for coordination with the Security Unit.”
The university management will issue guidelines to the LASU Student Union Executive Committee emphasising that the Students Union Arcade is not intended for residential purposes.
The university management stressed the importance of maintaining proper conduct and ensuring that campus facilities are used appropriately in accordance with university policies and regulations.
